The Department of Energy has been tightening energy efficiency standards for commercial refrigeration equipment, and more changes are on the horizon. If you’re planning equipment purchases or upgrades, here’s what you need to know.

What’s Changing

The DOE’s updated standards target maximum energy consumption for commercial refrigeration equipment categories including:

  • Reach-in coolers and freezers — 15-30% reduction in maximum energy use
  • Walk-in cooler and freezer panels — Higher insulation R-value requirements
  • Ice machines — Stricter water and energy consumption limits
  • Display cases — New efficiency tiers for open and closed display units

When It Takes Effect

Standards are being phased in over the next 2-3 years. Equipment manufactured after the compliance date must meet the new standards. Existing equipment is grandfathered — you won’t be forced to replace working units.

However, when it’s time for replacement, your options will be limited to compliant models (which are also more efficient and cheaper to operate).

How This Affects You

If you’re buying new equipment: Look for ENERGY STAR certified models that already exceed the upcoming standards. You’ll future-proof your purchase and qualify for potential utility rebates.

If you’re maintaining existing equipment: Proper maintenance becomes even more important. Well-maintained older equipment can approach the efficiency of newer models:

  • Clean coils regularly
  • Replace worn gaskets
  • Ensure proper refrigerant charge
  • Upgrade to ECM fan motors

If you’re building a walk-in: Specify panels and refrigeration systems that meet or exceed the new standards now. It’s cheaper to build it right the first time than to retrofit later. See our walk-in construction service if you need help scoping the build.

What Cold Pros Recommends

  1. Audit your current equipment — Know the age, efficiency, and condition of every unit
  2. Plan replacements strategically — Don’t wait for emergency failures to force a purchase
  3. Invest in maintenance — Extend the useful life of compliant equipment
  4. Consider upgrades — ECM motors, LED lighting, and smart controls can bring older equipment closer to new standards. Cold Pros handles commercial refrigeration upgrades for existing systems.
